What Is It & Why Is It Used In Deodorants?

What is aluminum?

Aluminum is an element and the most abundant metal on earth, making it an inexpensive ingredient in many cosmetic and pharmaceutical products we use daily. Aluminum salts, such as aluminum chloride, aluminum zirconium, and aluminum chlorohydrate are the most common ingredients in antiperspirants.

Why is aluminum used in antiperspirants?

Aluminum, when exposed to sweat, creates a gel-like substance that plugs up sweat ducts in the skin, thus temporarily blocking the ability of sweat to reach the skin surface.

Why you shouldn’t use products with aluminum?

Aluminum is a known neurotoxin that’s been linked to breast cancer, prostate cancer, dementia, and Alzheimer’s Disease.

What are parabens?

Parabens are a group of chemicals widely used as artificial preservatives in cosmetic and body care products since the 1920s. Parabens are linked to birth defects, sterility, cancer, and organ toxicity. Known for being endocrine disruptors, they interfere with hormones. In other words, ‘they’re estrogenic and lead to low testosterone.

Why are parabens used in deodorants?

Since cosmetics contain ingredients that can biodegrade, these chemicals are added to prevent and reduce the growth of harmful bacteria and mold, increasing the shelf life of the product.

Why shouldn’t you use products with parabens?

Researchers found parabens get easily absorbed by your skin, and they stay in your body tissues and fluids. Researchers also detected parabens in breast milk, serum, urine, and seminal fluid. Parabens have also been detected in the breast tissues of patients with breast cancer. One hypothesis links the increased incidence of breast cancer in the upper lateral breast area with the use of underarm deodorant (containing parabens).

Additionally, parabens are considered as xenoestrogens. Meaning, they can mimic the hormone estrogen in your body. Parabens bind the estrogen receptors in your body. Compared to methylparaben, ethylparaben, butylparaben, and propylparaben have high estrogenic activity in the human body. This estrogenic activity may lead to breast cancer development.

Other studies have shown parabens can elevate cellular level damage caused by UV exposure, which may even cause skin cancer. They can also sensitize the skin, causing allergic reactions. Another study also found ethylparaben used as an antifungal agent (5%) on human skin caused contact dermatitis.

What are phthalates?

Phtalates increase likelihood of cell mutation, disrupt endocrine receptors, and are linked to birth defects. Phthalates are a group of chemicals used to make plastics more durable. They are often called plasticizers. Some phthalates are used to help dissolve other materials. They also act as a binding agent or a solvent. Phthalates are found in hundreds of products, such as vinyl flooring, lubricating oils, and personal-care products, such as soaps, shampoos, and hair sprays.

Why are phthalates used in deodorants?

Phthalates help deodorant stick to your skin to more quickly absorb sweat.

Why shouldn’t you use products with phthalates?

Phthalates disrupt “androgen function,” or the way your body produces and uses the hormone testosterone. Testosterone plays a role in energy and muscle maintenance. The greatest concern when it comes to phthalates is they could impair reproductive ability in men. Research has also linked phthalates to lower IQs and higher rates of asthma.

What is triclosan?

The FDA classifies triclosan as a pesticide and may be a cancer-causing agent. First made as a pesticide, triclosan has been around since the 1960s. In recent years, it made its way into a wide range of personal care items.

Why shouldn’t you use products with triclosan?

Research has shown triclosan alters hormone regulation in animals. It might also contribute to the development of antibiotic-resistant germs and could be harmful to the immune system.

What is baking soda?

Baking soda (AKA sodium bicarbonate, how many brands hide the baking soda in their formula) is a chemical compound that’s usually produced commercially. It throws off your skin’s healthy pH levels by drying you out. This causes major skin irritation, rashes, discoloration, and ages and makes your skin more sensitive.

Essentially, it burns off your skin. Baking soda is used in fire extinguishers for its ability to smother carbon dioxide and release free radicals that interrupt the flame chain reaction.

Is this really something you want on your skin being absorbed into your body?

Why is baking soda used in deodorant?

Baking soda is effective at absorbing all types of moisture, including sweat, which makes it useful for keeping your underarms dry. It also effectively kills odor-causing bacteria. For these reasons, many natural deodorant brands continue to use baking soda as their main ingredient.

Why you shouldn’t use deodorants with baking soda?

Baking soda is the number one cause of skin irritation in natural deodorant today, and it is in no way dermatologist-recommended. Besides that, it comes with other issues that don’t make it the best ingredient to rely on in a deodorant. 

When you use baking soda in a deodorant, a chemical reaction occurs between your slightly acidic skin and the very alkaline baking soda. During this reaction, the natural acid mantle and moisture barrier are damaged. Over time, this damage leaves your skin more vulnerable to infections, pollution, and sun exposure.

Not only is baking soda bad for your skin, it stains your clothes. When a deodorant contains a greater percentage of baking soda, that still doesn’t mean it’s all that great at controlling B.O. Strength isn’t everything when a deodorant isn’t doing its job to begin with. Baking soda minimizes body odor for single-digit hours at best and doesn’t even get at the heart of what actually causes odor.

What about wax-based “natural” deodorants?

With wax-based natural deodorant, there’s talk about a “two-week detox period,” which is BS.

They say this detox time is the body changing its pH levels and purging the aluminum, which is untrue. In reality, this is about the time it takes for the wax in these supposed natural deodorants to build up a solid layer on your skin and essentially prevent you from sweating, performing the same function as aluminum by preventing you from sweating.

Meanwhile, wax-based deodorants, especially those that also use baking soda, are the culprit of staining and ruining shirts when the wax melts from your body temperature and mixes with your sweat.

Wax-based deodorants are also very sticky and tacky as the hard waxes have a terrible application experience when they pull hair and irritate the skin.
